Regal wins the Social Impact Award at the EG Awards, recognising the transformative impact of the Regal Academies. In partnership with Building Heroes, the Regal Academies are the first of their kind to deliver onsite training for military veterans and local people from underrepresented groups, directly addressing skills shortages in the UK construction sector.
The first Regal Academy opened in April 2022 at Clarendon Road, Watford, followed by a second location in January 2023 at Fulton Road, Wembley. Together, these academies have already produced nearly 250 successful graduates, with an annual capacity of 160 learners.
The Regal Academies provide an innovative pathway into construction careers, removing traditional barriers such as cost and time while offering welfare support and practical training. Each graduate completes a Level 1 City & Guilds Diploma in Construction Skills, earning a CSCS Card and Level 1 Health & Safety certification, alongside hands-on training in tiling, plumbing, plastering, painting and decorating, carpentry, and brickwork.
Over 50% of participants are from the military community, with others referred through local councils. By empowering these individuals, Regal is not only fostering new career opportunities but also helping participants rebuild their confidence, self-esteem, and sense of purpose.
With the UK facing a shortage of 250,000 construction jobs by 2025, Regal is directly tackling this challenge. By equipping graduates with industry-relevant skills and connecting them to a network of employers—including Regal’s own in-house construction division and supply chain—every graduate who has sought employment has secured a role. Many others have embarked on careers as self-employed builders.
Each academy generates over £2 million in social value annually, delivering not only measurable economic benefits but also life-changing personal growth for participants. Regal’s commitment to breaking down misconceptions about the construction industry is creating a diverse and sustainable talent pipeline.
As a proud signatory of the Armed Forces Covenant, Regal pledges ongoing support to those who serve or have served in the military. The academies provide a structured transition for veterans into civilian careers, combining camaraderie with practical, team-based learning.
Ghislaine Halpenny, Director of ESG & Corporate Affairs, Regal said:
“The Regal Academies are more than just a training initiative—they are a transformative experience for individuals and communities. This award underscores our commitment to creating meaningful social impact and solving critical challenges within our industry. We are immensely proud of every graduate who has stepped through our doors and gone on to build a future in our fabulous sector.”
Through this pioneering initiative, Regal ensures that its presence in local communities delivers tangible, lasting benefits from the moment it steps onsite.
